RSIC Mechanical Portfolio Update
July 2006
A significant drop of just over 4% this month compared to the markets 2% rise. The fall was due to the suspension of BETonSPORTS following the arrest of their CEO in the USA and the subsequent closing of their US facing business (the vast bulk of their operations). For now, BETonSPORTS is being given a zero valuation – if it comes out of suspension then the share price will certainly be very much lower than the 122.5p price it was suspended at. It will remain in the portfolio until it is either declared worthless or its anniversary date of next March comes, whichever is the sooner.
Elsewhere the significant moves were from Character (+26%), John David (+11%), Metnor (+7%) and Stanley Leisure (-7%).
New highs were set by Character and Metnor.
We sold Alumasc last month and purchased Cable & Wireless and John David in the value sub-portfolio. No shares are due to be sold this month. We still have a vacancy in the value sub-portfolio but once again there are no valid candidates.
NB: If BETonSPORTS does indeed prove to be worthless or nearly so then it will be the second disaster in the growth selections to date (Advanced Fluid Connections at –79% being the other). Despite these the average return on growth selections to date has been 33% so they have been very profitable but much higher risk – which is pretty much what we expected!
