The Lucky Llama is the club’s fantasy share competition. It started shortly after the club formed in August 1998 and has been running ever since which must make it one of the longest running fantasy share competitions in existence.
Initially it was an open-ended competition where each member started with a set £5000. By 2000 this format was no longer generating as much interest, especially as anyone who got off to a bad start was unlikely to ever be competing for the honour of holding the pot llama prize! Consequently, in September 2000 we reset the portfolios and this time members would start with £500 and receive an additional £500 each month to invest. Despite the changes, once again interest waned and so we hit upon the current format in September 2001 – each member gets £100,000 to invest (see, size does matter!) and the competition is run on a 6 monthly basis with the portfolios reset back to £100,000 after each 6 month period. Cash prizes were also introduced; £5 for the largest % gain each month and £50 for the best performer over each 6 month period.
